Our Highland Fling (a cliche too far, I know!) ...

Looking west to the Ardnamurchan Pennisula & Ballachulish Bridge from Loch Leven

Colin & I have just returned from an uplifting & memorable weekend on the Ardnamurchan Pennisula, in the Scottish Highlands. My schoolgirl friend Fiona (Ayr Academy days) was ordained as a Church of Scotland minister. She has been called to the Parishes of Acharacle & Ardnamurchan - the most westerly ones on the UK mainland. Unfortunately we do not have photos specifically of the moment but I'm hoping that they will appear soon on the parish website  -  http://aandaparishes.wordpress.com/news
After the official ceremony there was a splendid sit down 'high tea' & speeches in the village hall. The local primary school children sang in gaelic - Morning has Broken. We chatted to Fiona's friends from Glasgow and some of her new parishioners; one was a farmer (his abstract sheep motif tie revealed the nature of his farming practice) while another lady had lived in the furthermost west farm house; here it is -

After the ceremony we visited the lighthouse
and blew all our cobwebs away in the process:

I wasn't shouting - honestly

These young fellas turned out,

but no one was prepared to give an interview!

We were (of course) delayed in the evening highland rush hour -

Colin captured Sunday morning's tranquility with these photos of Loch leven

Glen Coe

The Massacre of Glencoe Lyrics

The Corries

Oh cruel is the snow that sweeps Glencoe
And covers the grave o' Donald
And cruel was the foe that raped Glencoe
And murdered the house o' MacDonald

They came through the blizzard, we offered them heat
A roof ower their heads, dry shoes for their feet
We wined them and dined them, they ate o' our meat
And slept in the house O' MacDonald

They came from Fort William with murder mind
The Campbell had orders, King William had signed
Pit all tae the sword, these words underlined
And leave none alive called MacDonald

They came in the night when the men were asleep
This band of Argyles, through snow soft and deep.
Like murdering foxes, among helpless sheep
They slaughtered the house o' MacDonald

Some died in their beds at the hands of the foe
Some fled in the night, were lost in the snow.
Some lived to accuse him, what struck the first blow
But gone was the house of MacDonald

 &
of course a little retail shopping was always a possibility!
I really, really needed to complete my Katie Morag library

We finished our journey with a visit to Stirling to see our son & heir, Jamie before heading back to the Lowlands and home to Cumbria.

Just back from 'Norn Iron', Belfast ...

Colin & I have just had a few days visiting our Ulster relatives & friends. Just as we were leaving home I noticed that the snowdrops on our garden bank had just poked their heads up. They are such a welcome sight; so I've just had to change the background image!

Mum-in-law Bettie is in fine form. We went for afternoon tea at The Merchant Hotel in downtown Belfast, a treat from Gary (Brother-in-law). Our friend Carole managed to join us between GP surgeries. Here we are:
Yes that is a rather green macaroon on the top tier.
I laughed when I saw the facebook comment below from Ivan.
"Miss Marple when Julia McKenzie steps down ?"
And as usual we came back with our stash of tea; personally sold to me by the 'young' Mr. Bell.

Happy New Year - Health & Happiness for 2012

Well it's New Year in the east, morning still in the west, while here in Broadwath there's quiet anticipation for 2012. Jamie has just driven to Edinburgh for Hogmany revelry & fireworks, while Nicky has tried on several pairs of very high shoes before meeting with friends for a meal and local partying in Carlisle. (At least it's a warm evening at 7 - 9oC)
But somehow a quiet evening at home with Colin & brother in law, Gary is very appealing.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

T'was the night after Boxing Day ...

Oh goodness how the waistband has expanded! Hope all the festivities are going well. I can confirm that the cake sparkles of white & silver were a definite improvement,

1st Weekend in Advent .....

Really looking forward to seeing Clare & Orla in action tomorrow, they are show jumping & Orla's going up 10cms to 55cm / 65cm / 75cm; so fingers crossed all goes well. Here she in in November pre-dressage test,
Don't they look lovely?!
In the meantime have just finished making the Christmas Cakes (one is for a friend). It's a pity we can't add  aromas to blogs, my kitchen is very warm and there's a very fruity smell with more than a hint of brandy. Here's a picture of last year's effort:
I'd made a big mistake though -  I sprinkled vivid acid green sparkles on at the end,
oh dear the greens of the holly really clashed ....Will show how things turn out this year.

My 'Day Job'...

Just to prove I do sometimes work, here's a picture of me with my colleague S and final year medical students.

They were feeling a bit tense - but now wonder as the pic was taken just before their clinical exams with us!

Candle lit BBQ in November.....

Can't quite believe that we were able to sit out last night, under the watchful gaze of Orion, and enjoy our friends' (& neighbours') candle lit BBQ! Somehow baked tatties, chicken & sausages tasted just perfect in the cool of the evening. Later we sat in doors sipping glasses of John Barleycorn or in my case sloe gin ...

... This all seems such a far cry from 24 - 25 November 2010. The Met Office's timeline says,
"First blast of snow showers, mainly affecting Scotland, North East England and Northern Ireland. Up to 20 cm on the East Pennines by the end of Thursday."
